Question: What do you think of this Plot?
I am a developing a Historical Fiction Novel and I want to know what you think of my plot so far. The setting spans the Civil War and centers around Abraham Lincoln. I plan not to tell the story of the Civil War in the straight-forward historical way.

“Since its formation, the United States of America has kept an illusive secret from the world, and the only one who knew of this was the President himself. But when a past evil comes to haunt America, this secret is left to Martin Van Buren alone. Two Decades later, Abraham Lincoln becomes President at a time of great peril. He stumbles upon a secret long forgotten. Lincoln must then choose whether to utilize this secret to save the country from total separation or risk its ruin to prevent the return of an evil from the past.”

I also have though of some titles but I am unsure which one is better:
“The Executive Secret”
“The Blood of Our Fathers”
“What our Fathers Did Not Tell You”

So what do you think?

Sounds intriguing, and I usually despise historical fiction! I really like the title “The Blood of Our Fathers”, though from the synopsis so far, “The Executive Secret” sounds more appropriate. Keep working at this, it sounds fabulous!

Question: I hate the phrase “giving back”. Don’t you think it is simply act of “giving”?
People like Haley Barry and other celebrities, and even we normal people who do a lot of charitable work, are said to be “giving back”. I didn’t take anything. I don’t think Halley Barry took anything except what she deserved–a big paycheck and fame, for a job well done.

You don’t have to agree with me. I just want to hear all the various opinions on this.

They have great wealth and are celebrated in the media and worshiped by common fools. They feel guilty so if they go wash some pots and pans at the local shelter, conscience satisfied. If you are poor and volunteer then that comes from the heart but it is your joy alone.

Question: Jihadists’ message to Israel at New York City rally: “The mushroom cloud is on its way!” What do you think?
Investigative Project on Terrorism (IPT) Newswire – April 21, 2006 : The Queens-based Islamic Thinkers Society (ITS) held a rally yesterday outside of the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan. Members of the Islamic Thinkers Society are easily identified by their Khilafah flags and provocative signs as well as rhetoric against homosexuals, Jews, Christians, Danes and others, depending on the hot button issue at the moment. Yesterday’s rally was held in response to Monday’s Tel Aviv bombing that killed 9 and injured scores. While carrying signs including “Islam will Dominate” with a picture of an Islamic flag over the White House, the small but loud group of men chanted threatening slogans (video of the rally will be posted on the Counterterrorism Blog soon):
Excerpts:
Leader (in Arabic): With our blood and our lives we will liberate al Aqsa!
[The rest also respond in Arabic:] With our blood and our lives we will liberate al Aqsa!
Israeli Zionists What do you say? The real Holocaust is on its way
Takbeer!
Response: Allahu Akbar!
Takbeer!
Response: Allahu Akbar!

Israeli Zionists, What do you say?
How many women have you raped today?
Israeli Zionists, What do you say?
How many children have you killed today?

Zionists, Zionists You will pay! The Wrath of Allah is on its way!
Israeli Zionists You shall pay! The Wrath of Allah is on its way!
The mushroom cloud is on its way! The real Holocaust is on its way!

We are not your average Muslims, We are the Muslims of Was al Sunnah

We will not accept the United Nations, they are the criminals themselves
They get paid by the Israeli and the US government to do their job.
We don’t recognize United Nations as a body
We only recognize Allah

Israel won’t last long… Indeed, Allah will repeat the Holocaust right on the soil of Israel
Takbeer!
Response: Allahu Akbar!

No wonder they call you sons of apes and pigs because that’s what you are.

The “sons of apes and pigs” business, of course, comes from the Qur’an (2:62-65; 5:59-60; and 7:166).
The West is facing a concerted effort by Islamic jihadists, whose motives/goals are ignored by the media, to destroy the West and bring it forcibly into the Islamic world — and to commit violence to that end even while their overall goal remains out of reach. That effort goes under the general rubric of jihad.

Jihad (in Arabic, “struggle”) is a duty of every Muslim!! Modern Muslim theologians have spoken of many things as jihads: the struggle within the soul, defending the faith from critics, supporting its growth and defense financially, even migrating to non-Muslim lands for the purpose of spreading Islam. VIOLENT jihad is a constant of Islamic history. Many passages of the Qur’an and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad are used by jihad warriors today to justify their actions and gain new recruits. No Muslim group has ever repudiated the doctrines of armed jihad. The theology of jihad, denies unbelievers equality of human rights and dignity.

Question: Can you think of a better word to replace “Give” in the TV show name, “Oprah’s Big Give” ?
When I first heard the title of this new TV series, “Oprah’s Big Give”, something perked my ears because it just didn’t sound right and I wondered what it was referring to. Now I know it’s about a filthy rich TV personality calling for others to open their pocketbooks to give as much as they can to some charitable cause she is promoting. Right!

So when I hear that show title, I usually replace the word “Give” in my own mind…with another word. Have you thought the same thing? If so, what other word have you inserted to replace “Give”…as in “Oprah’s Big [blank]“.

I’m looking for some creative humor here.
Thus far, I’ve heard one interesting suggestion for “Dump” in that title. Rates a grin, yes?

You misunderstand the phrase, I think.

Giving back means giving back to the community. Because we are successful members of society, we should do our best to help others less fortunate. It isn’t ‘because I earn money, I should give money away’. It is more ‘Because I have been made successful, I should give some of that succcess to others’. It’s kinda hard to explain quickly, this link explains it better :
